Start with what supplies power, what the endpoint accepts, how many destinations exist, and whether Ethernet data must share the path.

The product class comes before wattage
A switch is a multiport PSE. An injector adds PoE to a non-PoE data link. A splitter turns compatible PoE into a declared DC output for a non-PoE endpoint. An extender or powered intermediate switch introduces another power consumer and another link boundary.
